The $5000 Jacket

A few weekends ago, I had the pleasure of taking a weekend trip up to Boston while the fall was starting to set in and a chill was just starting to creep into the air. Unfortunately, the trees along the drive were only barely starting to change colors, but I'm sure now the drive is magnificent. While in Boston, I needed to enjoy some fashion exploration (a rare event in college life). So...I went to Newbury St. and had a blast merely browsing.

But browsing can lead to even more troubling times then never browsing at all. I learned this first hand in the Burberry store. I fell in love with a $5000 jacket. My mom has always said that I have a knack for finding the most expensive things in a store just because of my taste...it's a curse. I had dreams about that jacket for 3 NIGHTS following its introduction into my life. And let me tell you, this picture from the Fall 2010 RTW collection doesn't do it justice.

Special delivery! From? Gilt.com! Ahh! So..story. The other day I'm sitting in class and happen to check my email at about 11:54am EST to find my daily announcement from Gilt about what they have going on sale at noon EST. And my eyes see Missoni. I looked last time Missoni was on because, as many of you likely know, Missoni is known for their fantastic choice in fabrics and have become particularly known for a zig-zag pattern I love. So back to the story, I'm in class and watching the clock till noon until I quickly sign into my Gilt App (that's def why they made it!) and find this AMAZING little Missoni zig-zag scarf that I had eyed during the last sale but not purchased. But here it was taunting me again and likely on even more limited supply...but the real kicker? $29! Regularly $250! So...I bought it...right then and there in class and 2 days later (WOW!) the package arrived from Gilt!

And can I please comment on the packaging? I have only ordered one other item from Gilt (a Marc by Marc Jacobs dress), and I saved the first box and am about to save this one. Why? Just look at it! It looks like a standard brown box on the outside, but inside has a cool fashion scene inlaid in black, black tissue paper wrapping my Missoni box, and a little black note with gold etching from simply saying "Thank you for your purchase" from Alexis + Alexandra (the founders). I Can Hear the Bells

DON'T scroll down yet...WAIT! You must prepare yourself for what you are about to see: Oscar de la Renta Spring 2011 Bridal gowns. Why am I sharing these with you? Because two people very dear to me happen to be in the midst of planning their weddings. And though I know one has "said yes! to the dress," it's still fun to take a peak at what's hitting the high fashion runways! Just a little fun...right?

The first I'm sharing with you has color in it...gasp! And no, I don't mean "champagne." A peasant inspired look, this whole image just seems so mystical and well...gorgeous! to me. It certainly is atypical but at the same time seems more "traditional" than a lot of modern dresses. What do we think though? Color ok or no? Please share!

The second is even more "traditional" but isn't necessarily a silhouette you see often on the aisle anymore. But perhaps playing off the idea that "more" (in this case, more fabric) is often more enchanting and alluring. And doesn't Oscar do a fantastic job with lace in both of these dresses?

Has anyone ever been more in love with I dress than I am with this Ralph Lauren Fillipa Dress? I know that this is from quite a few seasons ago, but honestly...I CAN'T STOP THINKING ABOUT IT! I was just sharing it's exquisiteness and reminiscing on Serena wearing it on Gossip Girl (Season 1) with friends earlier and couldn't help but share it with the world.

Oh I want it! The Victorian elegance, the soft ruffles that still fall smoothly along the figure, the high collar with ruffles, the simple details of pale flowers in the beautiful fabric...sigh...Ralph...why?! You're killing me softly. I need to own this dress one day.

I decided that Marie Barr's painting "Need" would be the first critique I posted. This large painting freaks some people out, but after I viewed it for a while, I couldn't help but delve into a different meaning behind the work.

The woman higher up clearly has devilish features associated with her...the red, the pitchfork looking microscope, the hair that turns into a devilish tail...while the lower has a more modest and pure look. Relating this to the images of food used throughout, I saw the devil as tempting the higher woman to think she "needs" what she sees (the cupcake) while the other turns to pure food that her body welcomes as a need and a healing source. The fruit is attached to her heart...like it's fueling it. It's not disattached like the cupcake (something that is not making the heart run).

Food for thought...literally ;)

Apologies and Art

My sincerest apologies for not posting in...forever! I took on a full-time position at an awesome art gallery this summer in the beautiful National Harbor! The gallery (Art Whino) has consumed much of my time and even though I've been doing fashionable things (such as styling photo shoots for my internship as assistant to the editor in chief of Fashion Fights Poverty's Lookbook) I haven't been taking photos! It's hard to take a full body photo of myself and I'm not about to ask patrons at the gallery!

Anywho, I'm sharing a couple photos with you of our most recent artists at the gallery. The above is "Cuca" by Tatiana Suarez of NYC...it rocks! You've got to come into the gallery to see her other stuff! I'm around Monday-Friday!

And below is the previous artist, Kelly Castillo of LA. I loved the titles of these: "Two Late" for the woman and baby and "Too Late" for just the man. I sold those to a happy customer :)

So for the next while, I will likely be focusing on doing art critique based posts rather than fashion. But let's be honest, how closely related is fashion and art?! Extremely! Designers are in essence artists and artists aren't unaware of fashion trends as they affect the art world as well!

I Wanna Rock!

My honest to goodness lifelong dream has been to be a rock star...yep, it's true. And when asked what clothing group (or stereotype) I would pick for the rest of my life if I had to, I would want to choose rocker clothing (w/ faux fur and pleather of course). How much fun is rock n roll clothing? It just makes you feel powerful and AWESOME. I love throwing on big fur jackets, leopard, and Doc Martens, just to name a few standards.

Has anyone else thought of what clothing stereotype they would either already most likely fit in or would choose if they had to pick one for life? Let me know!

Recently I became a group fitness instructor and this week adding that to a daily workout schedule has turned me into a gym rat! Because of this, I haven't worn anything fashionable in days (is that really an excuse?). So I haven't posted...and trust me, my gym clothes look nothing like the above photo.

After spending more than 4-hours doing various workouts on Monday alone (and no, I don't recommend this to my readers), I have spent the week feeling like the Hulk. Not in the way that my muscles look massive or anything intense, but because they feel like they're constantly tight (and thus, constantly sore!)...like I'm going to burst!

And today I started thinking, isn't it funny that the idea of a "gym" even exists? The fact that we lift weights and run in place on treadmills is interesting when you think about it. The reason I love the gym is because I love experiencing the great things my body can do. And yes, I LOVE SWEATING! It just makes me feel...alive! But back in the day (and in other parts of the world today), the gym was likely a comical idea. People were just fit because their lifestyles demand it. Now we hardly have to manually work for what we eat and use and live in and only those in extreme manual labor professions can really say that the idea of a gym is probably unnecessary to them.

Fascinating? I think so...and maybe I'm not even making myself clear enough because I am in awe of the idea. I absolutely love the gym (and doing various exercises elsewhere), but thinking about it, it feels like I'm building muscle for either health or vanity alone...it won't effect how efficient I am in my daily activities...likely why people avoid it unfortunately.

So though I am disappointed that I did not take photos of all of the lovely outfits the ladies wore to Sex and the City 2 night, I do have a few photos from our Cosmo adventure.  And yes, I was ticked that the glass was shaped thus (though it was a nice glass).  The second photo is of my beautiful mother in a stunning blue dress and the last is of Katie in a fun and funky Rachel Roy dress.  I was with her when she scored this fabulous Rachel Roy find from one of our favorite "Buy, Sell, Trade" shops on the west coast: Crossroads Trading Co.

Anyone else have photos to share from a night out with the girls?  I'd love to see them!  Email it!

Sex and the City 2 Review

I meant to do this sooner but was hoping to have photos of what I wore to post along with it.  I ended up wearing the Saks 5th shoes that I posted a week and a half ago, a black satin jumpsuit (racerback) that cinched just below the knee, my two sparkly bird friends (owl necklace and parrot ring) and a new D&G jacket for the cold/rainy/nasty California weather that shouldn't have been real.  

So before I review the movie, let me review the experience.  We went to a schnazzy bar beforehand and got a couple of cosmos.  BUT they didn't serve it in the standard martini glass.  I know purists think there is only one drink to serve in that glass, but most bars don't act like purists.  I WANTED THE GLASS!  

Then, we get to the movie about 45 minutes early to line up (as recommended).  I intended on taking photos of all of the different groups that dressed up and making an epically fabulous blog post out of it.  So when we get there to find no line, I'm thoroughly disappointed (has that statement ever been made?).  We go to get our seats in the theater and not only is no one dressed up, but most of the people were dressed like complete slobs!  This is opening night at 6:45 people!  This should have been prime time for happy-hour and cute outfits!  In fact, almost anytime should be prime time for a cute outfit, but I looked around to see a sea of sweats and greasy popcorn and dreamt of being in NYC (under the potentially false hope that they actually dressed the part out there).

So then the movie starts and I am SO excited (even after a number of epic fails).  And I definitely enjoyed the movie for the fun fashion and the one-liners, but the story line was rather weak and the actresses looked surprisingly old.  Miranda looked the best throughout (which wasn't necessarily the case in the series), and the little story lines came and went rather quickly.  I laughed most of the movie, but I would recommend waiting until it comes to your local Redbox if you're not totally into the series.  And if you are totally into the series, see it simply because you can't wait, but don't expect it to have the same pizazz as the series you know.  I would give it a 3/5...and that's probably being generous on the critic scale.

As an iPhone user, I have been happy that the fashion industry has really gotten into sharing more about itself through apps.  In fact, many of the apps on my phone are related to fashion.  Because of this, I would like to share a few of my favorites:

Fashion Network: 

    This one is absolutely fabulous and you can get lost in it for hours.  It allows you to watch full versions of the latest fashion shows from MANY designers and is updated as the seasons change.  A great (and educational) distraction! 

Gilt:

    Stemming from the site gilt.com, this app allows Gilt members to access the latest sales right when they become available.  Because Gilt sales are basically first come, first serve, this app is crucial if you're out on the town and want to make sure you check out a certain featured sale for the day (especially if you're on the east coast and the sale hits at noon!).  Or, if you don't intend to buy, it's fun to just see what the latest out there is and what is selling fast or not.  Great way (yet again) to simply study fashion. 

Shoe of the Day (Bergdorf Goodman):

    This app is FANTASTIC.  It is so much fun.  Every day, I check to see what the Bergdorf Goodman "Shoe of the Day" is.  The app allows users 24 hours to purchase the shoe.  I always wonder who's buying too because the average price range for the daily shoe is between $600-$2000 (generally closer to the high end).  But it is so much fun to just see each shoe everyday!  I even occasionally "send" the shoes to myself so I can save pictures in my phone and dream :)

Ralph Lauren:

    I really love Ralph Lauren, so I decided to check out their app.  I didn't really expect much (because I didn't know what to expect) and now, really enjoy it.  It not only updates to show the latest lines from the  Ralph Lauren Collection, but it includes backstage images, videos about the collection, and videos about the design house in general.  You enter into the Ralph Lauren world and get swept away.  It's branding at its best!

Twitterrific:

     This isn't technically a "fashion" app, but that's what I use it for.  I created a Twitter account after making this blog and follow almost solely fashion related accounts.  With the touch of a button, I can see the latest news circulating in the fashion industry and even click their links to read more if I am inclined.  

If you have any others you would like to share, please do!  I have checked out some other fashion apps, but these are the only that I consistently use.

Thanks to my aunt Katherine, I have recently been made aware of a fabulous hat designer, Philip Treacy.  My aunt sent his link my way because our Irish family takes pride in other Irishmen's (and women's) successes!  But when I looked at his website, I was completely engrossed and fascinated.  His hats are MAGNIFICENT!  I would love to own one!

Treacy is based in London and has had huge success and has found many celebrity fans in less than 20 years since graduating from a fashion program.

Today is a great time to introduce him to you, because he designed Sarah Jessica Parker's hat not only for the London premiere of Sex and the City 1, but for the London premiere of Sex and the City 2! Fabulous!

Opinion: Signature Scent

For many years now I have been wearing one scent: Dior J'adore.  I originally chose it while in the pursuit of a "signature scent."

As many of you likely know, scent is the strongest thing tied to memory.  For the years prior to my signature scent hunt, I had dabbled here and there in other scents (such as scents from Lucky and Tommy Hilfiger), and, like many young girls, in various Bath and Body Works scents.

But when I decided that I needed a signature scent, so that people would think of me everytime they smelled it, I went to Macy's and hunted the perfume aisles for one that would span a lifetime.

I love Dior J'adore, but should a person be limited to just one scent?

The latest trend in fashion has nothing to do with skirt length and everything to do with technology.  Fashion films have become one of the best (and most interesting) ways for fashion houses to share their fashion on the web.  It is not only interesting to watch, but a rather smart marketing technique! 

The following, "Lady Blue Shanghai," was made for Christian Dior.  Featuring Marion Cotillard and made by David Lynch, this is more than just fashion, it's a movie!  The main Dior pieces featured are the handbags.

Recently I have become completely obsessed with jewelry that looks like animals and is made of little rhinestones! I picked up the parrot ring above at a boutique in CA called S.W.A.K. I was debating between the parrot and a beautiful peacock that spread out along multiple fingers. The parrot fit perfectly and was so colorful and fun that it was hard to pass up!

I received multiple compliments from strangers within the two hours immediately following the purchase.  It completely makes an outfit.  It's fun and can be dressed up or down!

These were both featured on my blog before construction and have become two of my favorite pieces of jewelery.  The snake bracelet adds pizazz and looks great with blue jeans, and the owl necklace is long enough to define a plain dress or shirt!  I picked both up at the new Charming Charlie location in the National Harbor (DC area).

Anybody else have a fondness for blingin' animal jewelry?  I'd love to see what you've found!

For those of you who follow fashion closely, you have likely heard a bit of the hubbub around this ad.  Marc Jacobs himself has decided to be the model for his new fragrance "BANG."  And what better way to advertise it than naked?!  Supposedly, people commented that he was in great shape and should do something like this.  But perhaps it is a tad too suggestive with the name of the fragrance?  Marc Jacobs is the man, but I do so love to see him in his classy suits more so than this.  I think this job should be left to anonymous models.

However, it sure has gotten quite a bang response from bloggers...perhaps that was exactly what he was hoping for.

I have become increasingly obsessed with Coco Chanel and her whole approach to not only fashion but life in general.  Recently I completed her biography CHANEL A Woman of Her Own by Axel Madsen and couldn’t help but record multiple quotes as I went.  The one above brings up an interesting idea that I often wonder 1. whether it’s true and 2. whether it can ever be embraced again in society.

Today, post women’s liberation and other such defining events, skin is certainly no longer hidden as it once was just 100 years ago.  Chanel was certainly one woman who made a HUGE difference in women’s fashion liberation by throwing old standards out the window.  But even though the Chanel woman was indeed more “liberated” than most, there was a certain sense of modesty and charm to her clothing that has been lost on generation Y.  Perhaps we are all still waiting to define ourselves to define our fashion, but what we are wearing today will always be apart of our definition.

In a course I took on the history of fashion, it was even joked that Victorian fashion (picture collars up to your chin and corsets) was the exact opposite of modesty (though it claimed to be just that) because it hugged the woman’s form so tightly that nothing was hidden.  Chanel’s clothes, however, often had a loose and comfortable fit that not only were not very revealing, but were somewhat masculine.  However, they were definitely seductive and classy.

A theme I will often return to in posts is re-defining one’s fashion.  Perhaps this has sparked some thoughts to encourage discussion?  I don’t know where I stand on it myself.

Hello my Loyal Followers and Fashionistas!

Construction on the blog is now officially over...phew!  In addition to general layout changes, the whole idea of the blog has gone through a major face lift.  LuLu's Fashion Files will now not only feature images of me and my 6-degrees of friends rocking the fashion world, but will also feature column posts.  These posts will not only be on what's going on in the fashion world, but will occasionally include other related industries and topics as well (such as general culture).

 I hope that this will encourage more of a forum-based response.  It is easy to leave comments below each post.  You can choose to do so anonymously or make a mini profile for yourself.  And you shouldn't receive any emails or spam by doing so.  So join the conversation!  I am happy to say that I have followers not only all over the United States, but all over the world!  So introduce yourselves!
